Co-ops: Rail Consumers Champion Named to Key rail Oversight Post
ST PAUL, Minn. (November 10, 2009) Minnesota Congressman Tim Walz today was named Vice Chairman of the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. The appointment was announced by Transportation and Infrastructure chairman James Oberstar, also of Minnesota.
Cooperative Network was quick to praise the appointment, noting in a congratulatory letter to Walz that he has been “such a steadfast champion for the concerns of rail customers during your time in Congress,” and adding, “We have greatly appreciated the efforts you have made on behalf of rail customers and the consumers of Minnesota, and look forward to working with you in your new position of leadership.”
Amy Fredregill, vice president for Cooperative Network’s Minnesota Division, added that “We are hopeful that the Surface Transportation Board (STB) legislation Chairman Oberstar has been working on for years will make progress in the near future. We are also excited about the recent developments in regards to H.R. 233, the Railroad Antitrust Enforcement Act.”
Fredregill also serves as chair of Gopher CURE (Consumers United for Rail Equity), a broad consumer coalition formed to promote reform of railroad shipping regulation.
