The Minnesota Cooperative Education Foundation, the nonprofit arm of the Cooperative Network, is pleased to announce that three students interested in pursuing careers in cooperatives have been awarded the 2010 Slettom Cooperative Leadership Scholarships. The awards range from $500 to $1,000; this is the sixth year that the scholarships have been offered.
The high school recipients are Kelsey Petit of Plainview and Nick Schiltz of Glenville. The college-level recipient is Daniel Helvig of St. Paul. a junior Agriculture Education major in the College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences at the University of Minnesota St. Paul campus. The graduate student is Joe A. Miller of Northfield who is pursuing his graduate degree in Communications at Bethel University in St. Paul.
The awards are based on scholastic achievement, leadership, and an ability to contribute to cooperatives in the future. The Foundation Vision Statement declares that, “The Foundation will sponsor qualified individuals and organizations to further the goals of cooperatives and their members.” The Foundation directors voted to create the new scholarship to work toward its vision of educating others about the role of cooperatives in our communities.
Kelsey Petit
HIGH SCHOOL
Kelsey Petit, is the daughter of Bob & Barb Petit of Plainview Minnesota. She will be attending the University of Minnesota Twin Cities for Agricultural Education. She has been very active in the Wabasha County 4-H Program serving on the executive council, county ambassador, dairy judging team, quiz bowl team and travel exchange. In high school she has participated in soccer, track and field, musical, band, choir, FFA, and statistician for the wrestling team.
Nick Schiltz
HIGH SCHOOL
Nick is currently a student at Northwood-Kensett High School. He plans to attend Iowa State University where he will major in Agronomy and Agricultural Engineering. Nick has the ultimate goal of changing and improving the agricultural community by utilizing all available resources. Through his hard work and determination, Nick hopes to revolutionize the Ag industry.
Dan Helvig
College
My name is Dan Helvig from Truman, Minnesota. I grew up on a 6th generation family farm,which is the reason for my interest in agriculture and cooperatives. I'm a Senior at the University of Minnesota studying Agricultural Education, Leadership, and Communications.. On campus, I'm involved in Agricultural Education Club, College Student Board, National Agri-Markteting Association, FarmHouse Fraternity, and Alpha Tau Alpha.
Joe Miller
Graduate School
Joe Miller has worked in cooperative communications for 17 years and is
currently public relations director for Dakota Electric Association in
Farmington, MN. Besides a degree in mass communication from Mankato
State University, in another life, Joe received an associate degree in
photography from Willmar Technical Institute. The combination of his
photography and communication skills has enhanced his ability to meet
the communication needs of his employers. He is currently working to
complete his thesis and coursework on a Master's in Communication from
Bethel University. Other cooperative service includes involvement on the
national Certified Cooperative Communicator board and chairing the
Minnesota Touchstone Energy Group. He is married and has three daughters ages 17, 13 and 10. |
