Local Unit: Cooperatives of Minnesota
Mission
The Foundation will work together with the Cooperative Network to advocate for
and best serve cooperatives across Minnesota.
Goals
The goal of the Minnesota Cooperative Education Foundation is to be the voice of
integrity providing the tools to educate Minnesotans about the value of cooperatives.
Vision Statement
Working together to educate individuals and organizations about the
value of cooperatives.
Objective
This unit will introduce cooperative
business as it occurs in our state of Minnesota. The presentations can
function as an introduction to the course, or as resources for local
information to be dispersed throughout a study of cooperative business,
such as the national USDA units.
Details about material
From Eggs to Electricity introduces the various industries represented by
cooperative business in Minnesota. It includes several ‘case studies’ of
specific local businesses, and includes many photographs and statistics.
Co-ops and Minnesota Communities explores the unique structures and community
relationships of cooperatives in Minnesota. This slideshow references
several recent studies in order to help students better place Minnesota
cooperatives within the broader context of American cooperatives.
Handout: Types of Cooperatives in
Minnesota is an abbreviated look at the
types of industries discussed at greater length in From Eggs to
Electricity
The Mini-Quiz is a small, 15-minute exercise that complements From
Eggs to Electricity (but students may
write better short essay questions after viewing the second slideshow as
well).
The Project is an opportunity for students to engage with local cooperative
businesses. It is designed to encourage hands-on research and push students
to learn from the lived experience of others. The scale of the ‘final
presentation’ is flexible, to meet various teaching schedules and time
demands.
The 2009 Database of Cooperatives in
Minnesota provides the name, town, and address of the vast
majority of cooperatives in the state as of 2010. It could be a helpful
resource for students working on their projects, for discovering more local
examples to include in the curriculum, or a variety of other uses.
